Săpânța, Merry Cemetery Romania

Merry Cemetery is located in Săpânța, Maramureş  in the country of Romania. It is one the of the national tourist attraction and open-air museum.
It became famous due to the coloful tombstones with naive paintings which describe a original and poetic manner , about the persons buried there also some scenes about the lives. The uncommon appearance of the cemetery was derived from the prevalent belief , culturally shared within European societies which is a belief that views death as something deeply solemn. It was connected to the local Dacian culture whose philosophical  tenets presumably vouched for the immortality of the soul and the belief that death was a moment filled with joy and anticipation for a better life. Stan Ioan Patras, a local artists who sculpted the first tombstone crosses in 1935 was also the founder of the Merry Cemetery.
